Welcome to Goodall's Strawberry Farm
FIRST OF THE SEASON
ASPARAGUS!
The first cut of asparagus was harvested just yesterday! And it is BEAUTIFUL! John and Emma have been busy tending their precious crop all winter and now their hard work is coming to fruition. They will be selling it in the Strawberry Farm Shop when we are open in May but before then you can still buy it from THE HONESTY BOX ON THE LYMINGTON GOLF COURSE DRIVE
STRAWBERRIES OPEN MAY 1st
CLOSED FOR THE SEASON
So where are we at at Goodall's Strawberry Farm?
The weather feels like its starting to warm up a little after the long cold winter, not wanting to tempt providence and definitely no to late frosts! Nothing lifts the spirits like hearing the birds sweet song at dawn and seeing the tough but oh so delicate spring flowers popping up in our gardens and hedgerows, primroses and violets are my absolute lifetime favourites!
More importantly ...back to business! The strawberry plants are enjoying the spring weather and starting to send out lovely new green leaves and the first flowers are getting ready to burst into life. From flower to fruit we can say its around six weeks but that does depend on the weather of course.
As you can see from the photos they have been snuggled under polytunnels and their fleecy blankets protecting them throughout the cold winter days and nights. It is important to now remove the fleece for a number of reasons. The bumble bees and early emerging bees are out and about working hard collecting pollen. They fly from plant to plant taking with them a dusting of girl pollen to the boy pollen and vise versa so the fruit can develop. Left on, the fleece will damage the blossom, so uncovering the strawberry plants is a job for this week.
The raspberry canes are starting to produce green leaves, which is a good sign for an early crop. We grow them in individual pots so we can keep control of the plant and watering goes directly to the roots from the irrigation system. We have various varieties so the picking season is spread over a longer period.
New Potatoes are planted and in place. We grow a salad variety called Charlotte, a lovely waxy potato. Growing then in pots again like the raspberries means the water goes exactly where it is needed.
The cherries are everyone's favorite and brings people from far and wide for the harvest, which varies but is about the last week of June to early July. The trees were pruned back after harvest last year and have had a good long dormancy period, to gather their strength to blossom and fruit. They are not at blossom just yet.
The blackcurrants and looking fabulous and covered in bud, so come June we should be enjoying a great crop. We've just enjoyed a delicious blackcurrant and apple crumble from fruit from my freezer, which I highly recommend!
